Taree: A tense 9-hour stand-off has ended with police shooting a man dead on Robertson Street.

Neighbours called police after they heard smashing and yelling coming from inside the property. They deployed a taser after finding the man allegedly lunged at them with a large knife.

When it wasn't effective, they fired. A critical incident investigation is now underway.
