Police say they had no choice but to shoot dead a mentally disturbed man alone inside his Taree home last night after he came at officers waving a large knife.

But the distraught family of 40-year-old Todd McKenzie claims there was absolutely no need to kill him.

"I think everybody in the family is absolutely devastated. It was something we believe didn't need to happen...absolutely didn't need to happen" - Francene Reo - Todd McKenzie's aunt.
