TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 11, 2013) - Layer upon layer, a 3D printer builds an exact miniature replica of an ancient Mayan roller stamp.

Scanning technology and 3D printing methods now in use at the University of South Florida have taken historical research and documentation to a new level.

Advances in 3D printing now allow researchers to bring artifacts right into the classroom.

"Terrestrial laser scanning allows us to see and visualize our world around us in 3D in a really rapid way so we can collect data and information that is really highly accurate," says Associate professor Lori Collins.

Lori Collins and Travis Doering built the Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technology or AIST in 2006 and have been rapidly expanding the capacity of the laser scanning to preserve, document and reproduce historical sites and artifacts.

In a collaborative research effort, the team is contributing their specialized 3D scanning techniques to allow others to look at history in ways never possible before.
